Why do you create cultural collections?
Share
People sometimes ask why Storytime Scarves includes collections inspired by different cultures and celebrations.
For me, the answer begins with belonging.
Every child deserves to see their stories, traditions and heritage reflected in the world around them. When children recognise something familiar in their play, it sends a quiet but powerful message: your story matters here.
I've often noticed that children are naturally curious about one another. They ask questions, notice differences and delight in discovering new ways of living. They don't need us to have all the answers. They need opportunities to explore with openness, curiosity and respect.
Our cultural collections were created to support those moments.
They aren't designed to teach children everything about a culture or represent an entire community through a single resource. No scarf could ever do that.
Instead, each collection is an invitation.
An invitation to begin conversations.
To celebrate traditions.
To ask questions.
To share family stories.
To wonder together.
For me, that's where meaningful learning begins.
Some of our collections are deeply personal. Others have been shaped through listening, research and collaboration. In every case, our intention is the same: to create resources that encourage children to see both themselves and others with curiosity, kindness and respect.
When children grow up knowing that every story has value, they begin to understand that every person does, too.

About Heidi
Hi, I'm Heidi, founder of Storytime Scarves.
I'm a Tiney Ofsted-registered childminder, graded Outstanding, and a parent of two. Over the past decade, through raising my own children and working as a childminder, I've developed a deep interest in child-led play, storytelling, belonging and the small moments that help children feel seen.
Ask Heidi is where I share the questions I'm asked most often, along with the observations that continue to shape my practice.
