How do you avoid stereotypes?

People sometimes ask how we create cultural collections without falling into stereotypes.
It's a question I welcome, because it's something I think about carefully.
For me, the starting point is remembering that no single resource can ever tell the whole story of a culture.
Every family is different.
Every community is different.
Every person's experience is different.
I've often noticed that children are naturally open to learning about one another when we create space for curiosity instead of assumptions. They don't usually arrive with fixed ideas. They ask questions, notice details and make connections in wonderfully honest ways.
That's why our collections are never intended to be a complete picture of a culture.
They're an invitation to explore.
When creating a collection, I spend time listening, researching and reflecting. I think carefully about the stories we tell, the symbols we include and, just as importantly, what we choose to leave out. Sometimes the most respectful decision is recognising that not everything can or should be represented in a single resource.
I also believe it's important to approach every culture with humility.
There's always more to learn.
More voices to hear.
More perspectives to understand.
For me, creating cultural collections isn't about having all the answers. It's about creating opportunities for children and adults to begin meaningful conversations together.
Because respect doesn't come from pretending we've captured an entire culture.
It comes from approaching every story with curiosity, care and a willingness to keep learning.
